On Monday, February 2, 2009, we had to put our precious Katie to sleep.
Her Kidney Disease had caused her to have tremors in January and on Sunday, February 1st, it progressed to seizures. It was so hard, but we knew the seizures would just continue more frequently and more severe.
Katie was diagnosed in April of 2005. They gave her 6 mos. to 1 year to live. At 8 mos. of age, she developed an infection on her heart. Her doctor believed that may have caused her kidney disease. She lived so much longer than we ever hoped for.
She was the final Renal Failure participant which allowed the study to move forward.
She made it all this time in relatively good health. We had to be sure that she only ate her 14% protein KD dog food. Her favorite treats were cooked carrots and potatoes.
She was definitely alpha and high strung! It didn't take much more than a squirrel to get her barking. She was my sweetheart. We miss her so much.
I'll bet there was one great reunion in heaven with all the other boxers I've lost! I know Max must be thrilled to see her!
Her final gift was 1 more vial of blood to the Broad Institute Renal Study.
